By switching to UTF-8 we could make it possible for people to enter foreign characters and have them display correctly. UTF-8 uses multiple bytes to represent characters just adding a second byte expands the number of characters to 65,536 (= 256 x 256). If we'd like to enable people to enter the occasionalJapanese (or Indonesian or Hebrew or Arabic, etc.) character, we need to switch to the UTF-8 character set. Each of these numbers, along with zero, denotes one of the characters in the ISO-8859-1 set.įor English speakers like me, this works just fine, but AnimeSuki has a global audience which includes many people that write with characters outside the ISO-8859-1 universe, most notably, Japanese. The limit of 256 characters is imposed by the need to store each character in one, eight-bit byte of computer memory. This set contains 256 characters each letter or special character is assigned a number between 0 and 255. ISO-8859-1, or "Western," includes most all of the accented letters used in Romance languages like English, Spanish, and German. Today I was reading this page which contains characters that were encoded in a character set other than ISO-8859-1, the character set used on this forum.
